Let's talk about inaction.
What does inaction mean?
Oxford Language Dictionary defines it as a lack of action where some is expected or appropriate.
Can you think of where your highlight reel might have inaction?
How many tries are included in your reel?
Of those tries, how many are long breaks of 50m or more?
Inside those long breaks, how much time is dedicated to showing you just running to the tryzone?
Those long breaks are the highlight reel version of inaction.
Sure, it might only be 3 seconds you are saving. But those 3 seconds can be dedicated to highlighting a 'quick' highlight like a pass, tackle, or lineout. Those are really where the game is won and how you can differentiate yourself from other recruits.
Pro tip: If you include those long tries, cut them off at the appropriate time when a defender obviously won't catch you. If it is a XVs game, this happens once you've beaten the fullback. In 7s, this is likely to occur once you've beaten the first defender and have a distance of 10m or more from the nearest defender.
In conclusion, scoring a try is fun. It is exciting. However, when it comes to promoting yourself don't waste valuable time to make a good impression by showing yourself just sprinting in an open field.
Onward!
